Keeping Your Toddler Safe
Keeping Your Toddler Safe
by Tammy M Pinarbasi
At this age your child is trying out their newly learned abilities and their curiosity is peaked. Which for you as a parent means, being alert to what your toddler is doing and taking precautions to insure your home is a safe environment for them. Some important steps to keeping your toddler safe are:
* Do not leave your toddler alone in the car, the house or when doing such things as bathing.
* Do not leave your toddler alone with pets unsupervised.
* Try to minimize the amount of poisons, toxic household products and medications kept in the house. You will not be able to eliminate all of them, so be sure to keep them locked in cabinets that are not within reach of your child.
* Guns in any home are dangerous. If a gun is kept in the home it should always be locked up and out of sight of child. It is a good idea to keep the ammunition in a separate place. Never show the child the location of the gun and never refer to guns or other weapons as toys.
* Keep your child protected from electrical wires, outlets and appliances. Use child safety locks made for appliances and safety covers for outlets.
* Use the back burners when cooking on the top of stove. Toddlers are very curious and can easily pull items on top of the stove down. Never leave the child alone in kitchen when oven or stove is in use.
* Keep all knives or other potentially dangerous kitchen items out of reach.
* Do not feed your toddler foods that can easily cause choking. Chop such foods into safe bite size pieces. The child should be supervised while eating and do not allow them to run or play when eating.
* Use safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs.
* Conduct regular safety checks around the home.
There are many more ways to keep your toddler safe and the above list is a good place to start. When toddler proofing your home, if you think it’s a potential hazard take action do not wait until after an injury. With toddlers you always have to think ahead.
