When is it okay to question your pediatrician?

March 15th, 2008 by admin

Empowered Patient is a regular feature on CNN. The topic on March 13th was about when it’s okay to question your pediatricians advice. I suggest checking out the article in it’s entirety at CNN Health. I know for me personally when I talk with my pediatrician about certain issues the response I am getting has more to do with the doctor’s personal opinion and less to do with medical facts. But that is to be expected when addressing such issues as toilet training, picky eaters or other similar issues. As for the medical side of things I know that I am not as knowledgeable as my pediatrician so in regards to medical topics I do take his input as expert advice.

Recently published was the results of a study by Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The results suggest a link between 9/11 and troubling behavior in preschoolers as well as the increased risk of troubling behavior in children who had been exposed to more then one traumatic incident. I found the findings interesting and it brings to light that even the youngest children are affected to some degree by traumatic incidents even if exposure is limited and we as parents think they are too young to be affected or understand. As reported by Reuters Health today, findings from a recent research study published in Psychological Sciences suggests that family life and biology both play a role in a child’s personality development. Also suggesting exaggerated stress responses by children who live in stressful family environments can lead to behavior problems.

After reading the findings of this study reported on by Reuters Health, I am thinking many of the findings didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out. As we all know family life plays a pivotal role in the development of our children but nonetheless worth reading. To read the article click here.

June 23rd, 2007 by admin

According to a recent study that was published in the journal Science, evidence suggest firstborn children may be smarter. The findings were interesting although personally I am not so sure as to how accurate the findings could be. I think there are many outside influences that could contribute to higher IQ’s in certain children. Outside link to published article.
