BEYOND TIME-OUT

BEYOND TIME-OUT
From Chaos to Calm

By Beth A. Grosshans, Ph.D. with Janet H. Burton, L.C.S.W.

Challenging the past 30 years of parenting advice, BEYOND TIME-OUT: From Chaos to Calm (Sterling Publishing Co., Inc. / June 3, 2008 / $19.95 / ISBN 978-1-4027-5297-1) by Beth A. Grosshans, Ph.D. with Janet Burton, L.C.S.W., sheds light on what is driving the current epidemic of unruly children and unhappy families, offering a highly effective, five-step action plan to reliably manage the protests so common in young children.

BEYOND TIME-OUT includes:
•A compelling explanation of why nearly a half-century of parenting—with its emphasis on talking, exalting children’s self-esteem, and time-outs—is largely responsible for parental ineffectiveness and so many children’s unruliness and anxiety.

•A new way to look at parent-child relationships through a lens of an imbalance of family power (IFP), where kids have too much power, and parents not enough.

•Solutions for the most common behavioral challenges parents face today, such as opposition, anxiety, sleeping, eating and toileting.

•Descriptions of the four parenting styles that most commonly lead to IFP: Pleasers, Pushovers, Forcers, and Outliers. Parents are often shocked to learn how they are inadvertently turning power over to their children. (Chapter 3)

•A five-step action plan called “The Ladder” that takes parents BEYOND TIME-OUT, all the way to effectiveness. Parents are given a step by step guide for what to do and say when faced with the protests and resistances of their children ages 3 to 10. (Chapter 5)

BEYOND TIME-OUT is a book for all parents, from those who are just starting out and want to develop successful parenting skills, to those who want to further hone and reinforce their parenting practices and confidence, as well as families struggling with unruly children who need practical solutions with real results. By using The Ladder, parents learn to instill the essential building blocks of self control, respect, and cooperation in their children—building blocks that are sorely lacking in far too many children today.

BEYOND TIME-OUT is not only for parents, but for clinicians, educators, child care providers, and anyone who works directly with children. Grandparents are also a ready audience, as they are eager to help their children promote a healthy parenting environment for their beloved grandchildren.

This timely book has the ground breaking ideas and practical answers that families have been seeking. However, BEYOND TIME-OUT is also timeless, as the ideas contained in this book identify core concepts and essential truths about parent-child relationships.
