So tonight was the big debut of Kid Nation. I tuned in just like many others did I’m sure. With all the hype who’s curiosity wouldn’t be peaked? It was kind of what I expected to see. Obviously if you put a bunch of kids together and leave them in charge with no adult supervision chaos is going to occur. I do give the kids credit, they did rather well under the circumstances. After viewing the show though, it really had me wondering has reality TV gone too far and where does it cross the line? The show has stirred up plenty of controversy of course because it has children involved. I found this article that covers some of the controversy surrounding this show, view here. My heart went out to some of these kids who were visibly upset. I do think 8 years old is way too young to participate. According to the article parents signed a clause agreeing to not have contact with their children during filming. Now personally I would never agree to that. Also, the article states some of these parents were upset after filming because their child was harmed. Now I say to these parents, you let your child go and agreed to the conditions shame on you! I am not saying it was okay the children were put at risk but what I am saying is the parents are just as accountable. Now some of these parents may say,”My child wanted to participate”. Their child may of very well said that, but what 8 year old is old enough to decide what is best for them. I personally feel, although many will find the show entertaining and it may end up being a hit, this type of reality show has crossed the line or close to it. Just my 2 cents. I would be curious to know what others think?

Last year, Ryan Hoye was a 17-year old who wanted to make a difference. He was your average teenager: dealing with ordinary things like school exams, a part-time job and the pressures of day-to-day life. And like the rest of us, he was perhaps a little daunted by a world filled with challenges ranging from global warming to war, poverty and homelessness. Read the rest of this entry »
